Introduction:
Communication is a process where people send messages, thoughts or ideas with other people. It can be verbal or nonverbal communication.
This essay will be focused on nonverbal communication, more specifically their types.
Discussion
Nonverbal communication, can be defined as the process of sending messages, thoughts or ideas through sensations, gestures, facial expressions, etc.. Furthermore, it can be categorized into different types, such as:
1. Facial expressions
First of all, due to facial expressions, it can be known what kind of emotions and feelings we are going through, such as anger, happiness, sadness and many others.
With our mouth, nose, eyes and forehead movements, our facial expressions and our mood can be indicated and changed. However, interpretations of facial expressions differ from culture to culture.
2. Gestures
Second of all, communicating with gesture support, like pointing, waving and others, makes the conversation more interesting and engaging.
Alike facial expressions, gestures also have different meanings n different cultures. For eample in Europe a thumbs up is a sign of doing things rigth, however, in Bangladesh is used for idiotic things.
3. Posture and body orientation
Posture and body orientation are one of the most important nonverbal communication styles, once the way you sit, look at people, what you are doing with your hands, says a lot. For example, it can tell if you are interested, focus, confident and listening.
4. Proximity
The amount of “personal space” that we need says a lot about a person, which is also and important type of nonverbal communication. We can tell our level of confidence with something or someone by the level of distance we have with it, therefore, the bigger the proximity, the more eye contact. For example, when talking to someone we should have a normal distance between me and the person, but when talking to a crown of people the distance has bot e bigger.
5. Paralinguistic
Although Paralinguistic refers to vocal language, it is different from verbal communication. This refers to speech rate, tone of voice and speech pauses.
Tone of voice and speed of speech have a very strong impact on people, as this is what makes them captivated and focused.
A powerful speech is made through pauses and tone of voice musings, as a simple change in the paralinguisticcan change the meaning of a sentence.
6. Eye Gaze
The eyes play one of the most important role in nonverbal communication, because looking into people eyes, blinking and staring indicate arrange of feelings and emotions, including interest, loyalty and concentration. As well as a sign of telling the truth and being confident.
7. Appeareance
Our appearance is more important than a thousand words. Our choice of clothes, hairstyle and other factors that affect our appearance are also considered nonverbal communication.
It is important to look appropriated through different scenarios and situations, for example we should dress something fancier to impress and to look confident in a meeting. Appearance is also related to judgement and preconcerts that are created but can also be avoided by the way that we dress and have our hair.
8. Silence
Last but not least the most important tool for nonverbal communication is, obviously silence.
This could have a positive or negative meaning, depending the situations. It could be a way of catching people attention, by doing strategic pauses in the speech. However, it could be a sign of weakness and lack of confidence, what leads to failure.
To conclude it can be said that this several types of nonverbal communication styles, decide and distinguish a good speech from a bad speech, it shows if a person is confident or not and more important this nonverbal communication styles are more important than verbal communication.
Conclusion:
With this essay we could understand that sometimes the most important part of communication is actually the nonverbal.
It is simple things like the eye contact, the tone of voice and our postures that makes what we are saying interesting and appealing.
