Emotional Intelligence and body language by: Pedro Lasdin Silva

Emotional intelligence and body language on the work place

Introduction:

Emotional intelligence is the ability of a person on understanding their feeling and also understanding the feeling of people around them. Body language is a type of nonverbal communication that consist of physical behaviours as oppose to words, body language is used to express or pass information to other people. Being able to understand both body language and have emotional intelligence is essential for a business manager or director, to understand what is going on with someone, also in cases where a worked refuse to talk, being able to understand body language will help get the knowledge of what might be going on and what problems workers are feeling. Having a person that can understand both body language and emotional intelligence is almost mandatory for a business to have.

Analysis

Why is it important to understand body language and emotional intelligence?
Well first of all you need to understand what you are feeling and being able to manage that feeling, if you are feeling sad, depressed or even happy and excited, you need first to know how to manage that feeling and not let that affect you, especially on the work place, if you are feeling sad and don’t manage that feeling, you will not be able to perhaps work as efficiently as you would like, and this can cause problems to you on your business or working place, as if you can’t manage your feeling every day you will eventually cause serious problems not just for you but also for the business you work on, as if you continue to be unproductive and also cause some kind of loss for your business you may be let off or fired.
Having a supervisor that can understand this emotion, he could help the workers overcome and even help the workers control these emotions. If there is a problem on a business and the supervisor has emotional intelligence he would be able to find out what the problem might be and were it might be coming from, if it’s a person then the supervisor would know how to cope with the worker and help manage their feeling.
Understanding body language will help the supervisor know what is wrong with a person, if you just ask what is wrong the worker will certainly say that nothing is wrong and that there is no problem but is you can see how their body react when you ask a question may tell much more than words. If a worker’s fidgets to much may tell you that the worker is nervous or maybe hiding something.
If a worker has a close posture, this may indicate that the worker feels inferior to other people, and this could link with the rapid blinking of the eyes that means a person is uncomfortable and if a worker is no comfortable on the working place they can feel intimidated by other workers and other workers may see that worker as inferior and see them as not good enough, this can lead into further discomfort for the worker and if a supervisor can understand that he will surely help the worker have an open posture, which will boost their confidence and make them feel like they are good enough or even better than the rest, but having an open posture may be negative as the worker can feel like he is in control which may not be the case, but in the other hand this can be useful for a manager or a supervisor as other workers will understand that they are not in charge and should do what the managers and supervisor says.
The mouth is one of the most common facial expressions to understand, if a worker bites their lip they might be feeling stressed or anxious.
The most common and easiest way to understand what a person is feeling are the facial expression, and there are some facial expressions that can tell what a person is feeling on the workplace and if a supervisor can understand their facial expression he can work with them to improve whatever they need, if a worker seems confused, happy or sad may seem that something is not right so it’s essential for a supervisor to understand that and help them.

Conclusion

To conclude I truly believe that a business having someone that can understand body language and have emotional intelligence will help the business increase productivity and prevent loss of profit as they will be able to understand what is wrong with the workers and if what they feel is affecting the way they work, the supervisor will help them solve their problems, and try to make them feel good again and maybe make them work to their full potential, this way if the supervisor or manager can do this with success the productivity will increase and if he also help workers feel good, there will be less absent rate, less delay on producing products and worker will be more concentrated so less waste will be made, all of this resulting on benefits to a business and most important also to the working environment and also to the workers.
