How to
Negotiate Nicely Without Being a Pushover
Nowadays
people don’t really like to negotiate . In many cases they prefer to accept the
first offer on the price than work to get a
better deal. They just are afraid to have an interaction with other person so they miss their chance for getting a better offer.
Here are some tips that
will help you to negotiate:
1. Make a small talk
Even e few minutes of a small ,neutral talk can help
you to get to know better other person, their interests and plans. This talk can often
provide crucial information that might help you later. It also sometimes helps establish
a trust.
2. Listen and ask
questions
The key for successful negation is carefully listening
to the person, to better understand their wants, needs and motivation. It’ll help you frame how to get to the right results. Ask
many open-ended question and give your listener enough time to respond. Follow
the 70/30 rule (listen 70 % of the time and talk only 30% of the time)
Instead of treating each other like enemies and working against each other, use “we”
statements that evoke the feeling that you are a team and want the negotiations
to end successfully for both sides. This will naturally make the other party more willing to meet consensus.
4. Remember
Win-Win
One of the most important tip to
remember is win-win rule . When negotiating many people think that it is about
screwing someone over to get what you want- but that’s completely
backwards. Negotiating is
about getting a good deal; aiming to destroy the other party will do you no
favours. But your long-term
reputation can be strongly harmed, damaged.
